What is the most sustainable fabric?
No single fabric is perfect on every measure. But the ranking is reasonably clear when you look at water use, chemical inputs, carbon footprint, biodegradability, and microplastic shedding together. Natural fibers consistently outperform synthetics. Within natural fibers, linen and hemp lead.

Why linen and hemp rank highest
Linen (from flax) and hemp share similar environmental profiles. Both are bast fiber crops that grow with rainfall, need no irrigation in most climates, require no synthetic pesticides, and produce no microplastics. Both biodegrade completely. Both sequester carbon while growing. Both improve or maintain soil health. Between them, linen tends to produce finer, softer fabric. Hemp yields more fiber per acre and sequesters more carbon per crop cycle. For most practical purposes, they are interchangeable at the top of the sustainability ranking.
Where does organic cotton rank?
Organic cotton is a strong choice. It eliminates the pesticide burden of conventional cotton — a major factor — and organic farming practices improve soil health and water retention over time. It is biodegradable and produces no microplastics. The two limitations: water use (organic cotton uses less water than conventional but still more than linen or hemp) and yield (lower than conventional cotton, meaning more land per kilogram of fiber). For consumers who need soft, easy-care fabric and want to avoid synthetics, organic cotton is an excellent choice, even if it is not quite at the top of the ranking.
What about Tencel and other semi-synthetics?
Tencel (lyocell) is the most sustainable semi-synthetic option. It is made from wood pulp — a renewable feedstock — using a closed-loop solvent process that captures and reuses over 99% of chemicals. It biodegrades. It does not shed synthetic microplastics. Modal (a form of viscose) uses a similar process but with less rigorous chemical recovery — it varies by producer. Standard viscose/rayon often involves harsh chemical processes with incomplete recovery, making it less clean than Tencel. Tencel slots in below linen and hemp (which require almost no processing inputs) but above conventional cotton and significantly above all synthetic fabrics.
Why are synthetics at the bottom?
Polyester, nylon, and acrylic share the same fundamental problem: they are made from petroleum, they do not biodegrade, and they shed microplastic fibers with every wash cycle. A polyester fleece jacket sheds hundreds of thousands of microplastic fibers per wash — fibers that pass through wastewater treatment and enter rivers, oceans, and eventually the food chain. Studies have found microplastics in human blood, breast milk, and placentas. The majority of these particles come from synthetic textiles. Synthetics also have a high carbon footprint in production and persist in landfill indefinitely. Recycled polyester reduces virgin plastic demand but does not solve the microplastic problem. On all the sustainability measures that matter most, synthetics are the worst option.
What is the most sustainable choice in practice?
For everyday clothing: organic cotton, linen, or hemp. All three are widely available, wash easily, and cover most wardrobe categories. For knitwear and cold-weather layers: certified responsible wool (RWS or ZQ) or alpaca. Both are natural, durable, and biodegradable. For bedding: linen or organic cotton. Both are natural, breathable, and long-lasting. The most sustainable choice is also a durable one. A linen shirt worn and washed 200 times has a far lower environmental footprint per wear than a cheap cotton shirt replaced every year — even if the cotton is organic. Buy less. Buy better. Buy natural fibers and keep them a long time.
