Does wool biodegrade?
Yes — completely. Wool is a natural protein fiber. When buried in soil or composted, wool breaks down and releases nitrogen and other nutrients back into the earth. It does not produce microplastics. A wool garment in soil will decompose within months to a few years depending on conditions. By contrast, a polyester or nylon garment will persist in landfill for hundreds of years while slowly fragmenting into smaller and smaller microplastic particles that enter soil and water.
