Better Cotton (formerly Better Cotton Initiative) is a mainstream program that sets sustainability targets for conventional farmers. It does not require organic certification and allows pesticide use — it is an improvement over unaudited conventional cotton, but significantly less rigorous than GOTS organic. For the most meaningful commitment: look for GOTS certification. For a step up from conventional without the full organic premium, Better Cotton is still an improvement.
How does cotton compare to linen and wool on sustainability?
Linen is more sustainable than conventional cotton. Flax (the plant linen comes from) grows on rainfall, requires no irrigation, uses minimal pesticides, and the entire plant is used. On water use and chemical inputs, linen wins clearly. Wool is similarly more sustainable than conventional cotton on water and pesticide use, though it introduces methane emissions from sheep and animal welfare considerations that cotton does not. Organic cotton narrows the gap with both linen and wool and is a responsible choice. Conventional cotton sits at the bottom of the natural fiber sustainability ranking.
Does cotton biodegrade?
Yes — completely. Cotton is a natural cellulose fiber. It breaks down in soil, in compost, and in landfill without producing microplastics or persistent chemicals. The timeline depends on conditions: a cotton garment in active compost may break down in months; in a sealed landfill with little moisture or oxygen, it takes longer but still degrades.
