Wool fabric is one of the oldest and most versatile textiles — spun from the fleece of sheep and other animals, woven or knitted into fabric used for everything from winter coats to summer suiting.
What wool fabric is
Wool is a protein fiber grown by sheep. Each fiber has a natural crimp — a wave-like structure — that traps air and gives wool its insulating properties. That same crimp makes wool elastic and resilient: it springs back after compression, which is why wool garments hold their shape. As a protein fiber, wool is fully biodegradable and does not shed synthetic microplastics when washed.
Types of wool fabric
Worsted wool is smooth, tightly woven, and made from long-staple fibers combed parallel before spinning. It is the standard for suits, trousers, and tailored garments — it drapes well and resists wrinkles. Woolen fabric is made from shorter, carded fibers and has a looser, more textured structure; it is warmer and softer but less structured, used for outerwear and casual knitwear. Tweed is a heavy, textured woolen fabric traditionally woven in Scotland and Ireland. Flannel has a soft, brushed napped surface, used for shirts and lighter outerwear. What to look for when buying
Wool percentage matters: 100% wool or close to it performs better than heavily blended fabrics. For garment weight, fabric sold in grams per square meter (gsm) tells you more than vague descriptors — 200-280gsm suits spring and autumn, 300gsm and above for winter coats. Certifications indicate responsible sourcing: RWS or ZQ for animal welfare, OEKO-TEX for chemical safety in processing. Country of origin is worth noting — merino from New Zealand and Australia, shetland from Scotland, tweed from Ireland and Scotland all have distinct regional qualities.
Wool fabric vs synthetic alternatives
Wool regulates temperature in both directions, resists odor naturally, and biodegrades at end of life. Polyester does none of these. A polyester fleece sheds hundreds of thousands of microplastic fibers per wash cycle; wool sheds natural protein fibers that break down in the environment. Wool's durability also means fewer replacements over time. The higher upfront cost of quality wool fabric is offset by its longevity compared to synthetic alternatives.
Caring for wool fabric
Most wool fabric clothing requires gentle hand or machine wash on a wool cycle in cool water. Use a wool-specific detergent. Lay flat to dry — never hang a wet wool garment, which causes it to stretch. Never tumble dry unless the label says otherwise. Steam iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth if needed. With proper care, wool garments last years or decades.
