What is eco-friendly clothing?

"Eco-friendly" is one of the most overused and least defined terms in fashion. A garment is only meaningfully eco-friendly when its full lifecycle is considered — fiber, dyeing, manufacturing, transport, use, and disposal. Here is what the term should mean and how to verify it.

What eco-friendly means for clothing

A genuinely eco-friendly garment performs well across several dimensions, not just one: Fiber choice — natural fibers (linen, organic cotton, wool, silk) generally have lower environmental impact than synthetics. They are biodegradable, do not shed microplastics, and in many cases require fewer chemical inputs to grow. Dyeing processes — conventional textile dyeing is one of the most polluting industrial processes globally, discharging heavy metals and toxic chemicals into waterways. Eco-friendly dyeing uses restricted chemistries, closed-loop water systems, or natural dyes. OEKO-TEX and Bluesign certification address this. Supply chain — who made it, where, under what conditions, and with what energy sources. A garment made from organic cotton in a factory running on coal with no labor protections is not eco-friendly in full. End-of-life — does it biodegrade? Can it be recycled? Does it shed microplastics throughout its life? A linen garment returns to soil. A polyester garment fragments into microplastics for centuries. Most "eco-friendly" marketing addresses one of these dimensions selectively while ignoring the others.

Why "recycled polyester" is not eco-friendly

Recycled polyester is the most common case of selective eco-framing in fashion. Brands market it as turning plastic bottles into clothing — diverting waste from landfill, a genuine environmental benefit in isolation. What the marketing omits: recycled polyester is still polyester. Every wash cycle releases hundreds of thousands of microplastic fibers into wastewater. These fibers pass through treatment plants and enter rivers, oceans, and eventually food chains. A polyester garment — recycled or virgin — sheds microplastics throughout its entire lifespan. Recycled polyester also does not biodegrade. At end of life, it joins the landfill problem it was marketed as solving. The downcycled fiber typically cannot be recycled again into clothing. The manufacturing process for recycled polyester is energy-intensive, though less so than virgin polyester. The net environmental benefit over virgin polyester is real but small. Compared to linen or organic wool — which biodegrade, do not shed microplastics, and require no petrochemical inputs — recycled polyester is not meaningfully eco-friendly. It is the least bad version of a fundamentally problematic material.

Natural fibers vs synthetic alternatives

Synthetic fibers dominate the global clothing market by volume because they are cheap to produce. The environmental case for choosing natural fibers over synthetics is strong across most metrics: Microplastics — synthetics shed plastic fibers throughout their lifespan. Natural fibers shed protein or cellulose fibers that biodegrade. End-of-life — natural fibers biodegrade in months to years. Synthetics persist in landfill for centuries. Raw material — synthetics are derived from petroleum, a finite resource. Natural fibers are renewable when farming is managed responsibly. Durability and aging — natural fibers like wool and linen improve or hold steady with age. Synthetics typically degrade in hand feel and performance over time. The counterargument is water use: synthetic fiber production uses less water than some natural fiber crops, particularly conventional cotton. This is addressed by choosing low-irrigation natural fibers (flax/linen, wool) or certified organic versions of higher-water crops. No natural fiber is impact-free, but natural fibers consistently outperform synthetics across the dimensions that matter most for environmental impact: microplastics, end-of-life, and chemical inputs.

Certifications that prove eco-friendly claims

The terms "eco-friendly," "sustainable," and "green" are not regulated. Any brand can use them without verification. Certifications are the only mechanism for third-party accountability. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) — the most rigorous certification for clothing. Covers organic farming of the raw fiber and restricts harmful chemicals in processing, dyeing, and finishing. Requires social compliance throughout the supply chain. A GOTS label on a garment is a meaningful claim. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — tests the finished product for harmful substances: pesticide residues, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and harmful dyes. Does not cover farming or manufacturing processes, but confirms the garment against your skin is safe. Bluesign — covers chemical management in textile manufacturing. Relevant for dyeing and finishing processes. Often held by mills rather than brands directly. Fair Trade — covers labor conditions and wages. Environmental coverage is limited, but it addresses the social dimension of sustainability. RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) and ZQ Merino — cover animal welfare and land management for wool specifically. No certification covers every dimension. A brand holding GOTS and Fair Trade is making stronger claims than a brand with neither, but neither alone is the whole picture.

Greenwashing: what to watch out for

Greenwashing — making environmental claims that are misleading or unverifiable — is widespread in fashion because the terms involved are unregulated and consumer scrutiny is limited. Common patterns: "Sustainable collection" within a fast fashion brand — when a brand known for high-volume low-quality production releases a "conscious" or "eco" line, the collection is typically a small fraction of overall production. The brand's environmental impact is dominated by the other 95%. "Made from natural materials" applied to viscose/rayon — bamboo and wood-pulp-based viscose are marketed as natural because the raw material is plant-based. The manufacturing process uses harsh solvents (carbon disulfide in standard viscose) and produces a synthetic-adjacent fiber with a significant chemical footprint. "Carbon neutral" from offsets alone — offsetting rather than reducing emissions is a weak claim. It does not reduce the actual impact of production; it buys credits to compensate for it. Vague percentage claims — "made with recycled materials" often means 20% recycled content in a garment that is 80% virgin synthetic. The cleanest signal: a brand that names its mills, publishes its fiber sourcing, holds relevant certifications, and can explain what it does not do as clearly as what it does.
