What is a natural fiber?
A natural fiber is a fiber that comes from a plant or animal — not from petroleum. Cotton grows in a field. Wool comes from a sheep. Linen comes from the flax plant stem. Silk comes from a silkworm cocoon. What they have in common is that none require chemical synthesis from fossil fuels to exist as fibers. This is the essential distinction from synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and acrylic, which are plastic — manufactured from petroleum through industrial chemical processes.
Animal fibers
Animal fibers are protein-based, composed of either keratin (in hair-derived fibers) or fibroin (in silk). Wool comes from the fleece of domestic sheep and is the most widely used animal fiber globally. Merino wool is a finer variety from merino sheep, with fiber diameters typically between 17 and 24 microns. Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, primarily from China and Mongolia. Alpaca comes from the South American alpaca and is warmer than most wool with no lanolin. Mohair comes from Angora goats and has a distinctive silky luster. Silk is produced by silkworm larvae spinning cocoons of continuous filament. Angora comes from Angora rabbit fur. All animal fibers are biodegradable. All are renewable — animals can be shorn or harvested seasonally. None produce microplastics when washed.
Plant fibers
Plant fibers are cellulose-based, the same structural material found in all plant cell walls. Cotton is the seed fiber of the cotton plant — the fluffy boll that surrounds the seeds is processed to extract fiber. Linen is a bast fiber extracted from the stem of the flax plant; it is one of the oldest cultivated fibers, used for thousands of years. Hemp is similarly a bast fiber from the hemp plant stem — stronger than cotton, requires less water and no pesticides, and has a coarser hand when untreated. Jute is a coarser bast fiber used more commonly in industrial textiles than clothing. Plant fibers vary significantly in growing input requirements. Hemp and linen require far fewer pesticides and water than conventional cotton. Organic cotton addresses the pesticide concern but still requires substantial irrigation in many growing regions.
Semi-natural fibers
Some fibers occupy a middle category: they start with natural cellulose but require significant chemical processing to become fiber. TENCEL (lyocell), modal, and viscose (rayon) are all made from wood pulp — usually from trees like eucalyptus, beech, or bamboo — dissolved in solvent to create a liquid that is then extruded and solidified into fiber. These are not natural fibers in the same sense as cotton or linen, but they are also not petroleum-derived synthetics. TENCEL uses a closed-loop solvent process that recovers and reuses most chemicals. Conventional viscose uses more harmful solvents with less recovery. All three are more biodegradable than synthetics. None should be marketed or understood as the same thing as the plant material they start from — bamboo viscose is not bamboo.
Why natural fibers are different from synthetics
The differences between natural and synthetic fibers are not just about sustainability marketing. They are material and functional. Biodegradability: natural fibers decompose; synthetics persist for 200 years or more and shed microplastics. Renewability: natural fibers come from plants grown each season or animals shorn annually; synthetics depend on finite petroleum reserves. Breathability: natural fibers absorb and release moisture vapor; most synthetics do not, trapping heat and moisture against the skin. Temperature regulation: wool and silk actively moderate temperature in both directions; polyester and nylon do not. Dye uptake: natural fibers accept dye differently and often more evenly than synthetics, and are more compatible with natural and low-impact dyes.
How to identify natural fibers
The most reliable method is the label — clothing labels are legally required in most countries to list fiber content by percentage. Natural fiber names to look for: cotton, wool, merino, linen, silk, hemp, alpaca, cashmere, mohair. Synthetic names to watch for: polyester, nylon (polyamide), acrylic, elastane, spandex. A burn test can also distinguish fiber types if you have access to the raw fabric: natural protein fibers (wool, silk) smell like burning hair and leave a crushable ash. Natural cellulose fibers (cotton, linen) smell like burning paper and leave a light ash. Synthetics melt, bead, and smell like burning plastic. Feel alone is unreliable — some synthetics are engineered to mimic the texture of natural fibers closely enough to be indistinguishable by touch.
The certification landscape
Several third-party certifications provide verifiable standards for natural fiber products. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) covers organic farming and processing of natural fibers through the full supply chain. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests finished products for harmful chemical residues — applicable to both natural and synthetic fiber products. Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) covers humane sheep treatment and sustainable land management. Textile Exchange administers several fiber-specific standards including the Global Recycled Standard and the Organic Cotton Standard. None of these certifications are perfect, and none cover every dimension of sustainability. But they provide public, verifiable commitments that go beyond brand self-reporting.
