Why fabric sustainability matters
The fiber a garment is made from determines most of its environmental impact. Synthetic fibers — polyester, nylon, acrylic — are derived from petroleum and do not biodegrade. A single wash cycle from a synthetic garment releases hundreds of thousands of microplastic fibers into wastewater. These particles pass through treatment systems and accumulate in oceans, freshwater, soil, and the food chain. Choosing natural fibers does not solve every sustainability problem in clothing, but it eliminates the microplastic problem and the landfill permanence problem at once.
Linen
Linen is made from flax, a plant that grows in temperate climates with minimal water and no pesticides needed in most European growing regions. Flax improves soil health. The retting and scutching processes used to extract linen fiber can be done without harsh chemicals using water retting, though chemical retting is also common. The resulting fabric is strong, breathable, fully biodegradable, and gets better with age — softening with each wash while holding its structure. Hemp
Hemp is one of the fastest-growing natural fiber crops and requires very few inputs — minimal water, no pesticides, and it actively improves soil through phytoremediation. Hemp fiber is very durable, naturally antimicrobial, and fully biodegradable. The main limitation on hemp fabric availability is historical: decades of legal restrictions on cannabis cultivation in major markets suppressed hemp fiber production even though textile hemp contains negligible THC. Supply has been growing as regulations have eased, but hemp fabric remains less available than linen or cotton and can be harder to source in fine textile weights.
Organic cotton
Organic cotton eliminates the synthetic pesticide and fertilizer burden that makes conventional cotton one of the most chemically intensive crops in agriculture. It uses no GMO seeds. GOTS certification — the most rigorous standard — follows the cotton through processing, dyeing, and finishing, and includes labor standards. Organic cotton is fully biodegradable and widely available. Its main sustainability limitation compared to linen or hemp is water use: cotton is a thirsty crop, and organic farming does not substantially reduce that requirement. Still, the shift from conventional to organic cotton is one of the most meaningful fiber upgrades available in clothing.
Wool and merino
Wool is renewable, biodegradable, naturally durable, and produces no microplastics when washed. A well-made wool garment lasts years or decades — far longer than cotton or synthetic equivalents — which significantly reduces its per-wear environmental footprint. The sustainability concerns are real: sheep produce methane, and overgrazing degrades land when poorly managed. Look for RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) or ZQ certification, both of which verify sustainable grazing and humane animal treatment. Merino wool specifically — fine-fibered and soft enough for direct skin contact — comes largely from New Zealand and Australia, where certification adoption is relatively high.
Silk
Silk is a natural protein fiber produced by silkworms and is fully biodegradable. The fiber itself has a relatively low environmental footprint — silkworms eat mulberry leaves and the production process is not chemically intensive. The ethical concern in conventional sericulture is that silkworms are killed (boiled) inside their cocoons to harvest unbroken silk filaments. Peace silk (also called ahimsa silk) allows the moth to emerge before harvesting, producing a slightly coarser yarn. Silk production is inherently small-scale and labor-intensive, which limits both its volume and its environmental impact relative to major fiber crops.
TENCEL and lyocell
TENCEL (Lenzing's branded lyocell) is made from wood pulp cellulose dissolved in a solvent and reformed into fiber. The closed-loop process recovers and reuses over 99% of the solvent, making it significantly more efficient than conventional viscose. TENCEL biodegrades under industrial composting conditions. It is soft, breathable, and dyes well. It is a better choice than polyester or conventional viscose in most applications. It is not equivalent to a natural fiber — the chemical processing is substantial and the biodegradation requires specific conditions — but for garment categories where linen or cotton are less practical, it is a reasonable sustainable alternative.
