Natural fibers have been keeping people warm in winter for thousands of years — not because they had no alternative, but because wool, alpaca, cashmere, and their relatives are genuinely effective at managing heat and moisture in cold conditions. Understanding how they work and how to combine them makes a significant difference in how warm you actually stay.

Layering with natural fibers

The three-layer system applies to natural fibers just as it does to technical outdoor clothing. Base layer: merino wool. Lightweight merino (150–175gsm) sits next to skin and moves moisture vapor away before you feel wet. It keeps you dry when active and retains warmth when damp — the two things a base layer needs to do. Mid layer: heavier merino (250gsm+), cashmere, or alpaca. As the fiber absorbs moisture, a small amount of heat is released through a chemical reaction (the heat of sorption), which offsets some of the cooling effect of dampness. Critically, the air pockets within wool's crimped fiber structure remain intact even when the fiber is damp. Wool retains roughly 80% of its insulating value when wet. Down loses most of its loft. Cotton loses nearly all of its insulating value when saturated. For cold and wet conditions, wool's wet-insulation performance is one of its most important practical properties.

Cashmere vs merino for winter knitwear

Cashmere is the softer and lighter of the two. Fine cashmere (16–17 micron) is extraordinarily soft against skin and provides excellent warmth for its weight. The main disadvantage is durability — cashmere fibers are shorter and finer than merino, making cashmere knitwear more prone to pilling and less resistant to abrasion. High-quality cashmere from verified sources (Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, the Himalayas) is more durable than cheap cashmere blended with synthetic fiber. Merino is harder-wearing, available in a wider range of weights and constructions, and typically less expensive. It performs better as a base layer because finer gauges and lighter weights are more practical. For outerwear and knitwear worn over other layers, cashmere offers unmatched warmth-to-weight and softness. Alpaca for extreme warmth

Alpaca fiber is hollow — the medullary channel in the center of each fiber traps air, making alpaca lighter and warmer than sheep's wool at equivalent thickness. Alpaca contains no lanolin, which makes it naturally hypoallergenic (suitable for people sensitive to wool) and it does not felt as easily in washing. Royal alpaca and baby alpaca refer to the finest grades (under 20 micron and under 22 micron respectively) — these are soft enough to wear next to skin. Coarser grades are better suited to outerwear or items not in direct skin contact. Alpaca is not as widely available as merino, and prices reflect that. For mid and outer layers in cold climates, alpaca offers some of the best warmth-to-weight performance of any natural fiber.

What to avoid in winter: cotton next to skin

"Cotton kills" is a phrase used in outdoor and backcountry communities, and it captures something real. Cotton absorbs moisture readily — a good quality cotton can absorb 25 times its weight in water — and loses nearly all insulating value when wet. Wet cotton against skin in cold temperatures accelerates heat loss significantly faster than dry skin or a synthetic layer. For casual urban winter wear in dry conditions, cotton is fine — a cotton shirt under a heavy wool coat is a reasonable combination. But for any activity where you will sweat (hiking, skiing, cycling) or where you might get wet, cotton base layers and mid layers are a liability. Replace them with merino. This applies particularly to cotton denim as a lower layer in cold and wet conditions. Heavy denim absorbs water, dries slowly, and provides almost no insulation when wet.

Care tips for winter natural fiber pieces

Wool and cashmere should be washed less frequently than most people wash them. Airing out after wearing is usually sufficient for pieces worn over other layers. When washing is needed, use cool water (under 30°C), a wool-specific detergent with a neutral pH, and a gentle or delicate cycle with minimal agitation. Avoid wringing or twisting. Dry flat — hanging a wet knit stretches it under its own weight. Avoid tumble drying except for pieces explicitly rated for it; heat and agitation together cause felting. Store wool and cashmere folded, not on hangers, to prevent stretching at the shoulders. Cedar blocks or lavender sachets in storage help deter moths without chemical moth balls, which can leave an odor. Pilling on cashmere is normal and can be removed with a cashmere comb or fabric shaver — it does not indicate poor quality.
