Which natural fiber is warmest?
Warmth in fabric comes down to two things: insulation and moisture management. Insulation is about trapping air — the more air a fiber holds, the warmer it feels. Moisture management matters because wet fiber loses insulating value. A fabric that soaks up sweat and holds it against the skin will feel cold even if it is technically a warm material. Natural fibers vary significantly on both measures.
Wool — warm and moisture-resistant
Wool is the most practically warm natural fiber for everyday use. Its crimped, scaly fiber structure creates thousands of tiny air pockets that trap warmth. More importantly, wool stays warm when damp — its fiber absorbs moisture into its core rather than holding it on the surface, so you feel dry even when perspiring lightly. Wool begins to lose warmth only when saturated, which takes significantly longer than cotton reaching the same point. Standard wool is also durable enough that warmth lasts over the long life of a garment.
Cashmere — warmest per weight
Cashmere is warmer than wool pound for pound. Cashmere fibers are finer than most wool — typically 14 to 19 microns — and have a hollow core that traps air more efficiently per unit of fiber. A lightweight cashmere sweater provides more insulation than a heavier wool one. The practical trade-off: cashmere is more delicate, pills faster, and costs significantly more. It is the best choice for warmth in a light, refined garment — less so for hard-wearing outdoor use.
Alpaca — warmer than wool, no lanolin
Alpaca fiber is warmer than standard wool and is naturally free of lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic for people who react to lanolin in sheep wool. Like cashmere, alpaca has a hollow fiber structure that provides excellent thermal insulation. Baby alpaca — the first shearing from a young animal, with fiber diameters typically under 23 microns — is also soft enough for direct skin contact. Alpaca is not as widely available as wool or cashmere, but it is increasingly found in cold-weather knitwear from natural fiber brands.
Merino — best warmth-to-weight for active use
Merino wool is the standard choice for base layers, midlayers, and active cold-weather clothing because it combines warmth with performance moisture management. Merino fibers are fine enough (17 to 24 microns) to feel soft against skin, and they regulate temperature effectively across a wide range of activity levels. Merino keeps you warm at rest and prevents overheating during exertion by wicking moisture vapor away from the body. For winter hiking, travel, and sport, merino is the most versatile single-fiber choice.
Silk — surprising warmth as a base layer
Silk is a better insulator than most people expect. Its long, smooth fibers form a dense, lightweight layer that traps warmth effectively. Silk base layers under wool or cashmere can meaningfully extend the warmth of an outfit without bulk. Silk also wicks moisture, though less aggressively than merino. In cold and dry conditions, silk performs well. In wet or high-exertion conditions, it is less effective than wool. Most commonly used as a thin underlayer rather than a standalone cold-weather fabric.
Linen and cotton — not for cold
Linen and cotton are not insulating fibers. Cotton absorbs moisture readily and holds it against the skin, accelerating heat loss — the phrase "cotton kills" exists because wet cotton in cold conditions is genuinely dangerous in outdoor settings. Linen is even less insulating than cotton; its open weave and low moisture retention are features in warm weather but liabilities in cold. Neither fiber is suitable as a primary cold-weather material, though cotton flannel can feel warm due to its napped texture, which traps some air.
The verdict
For pure warmth, cashmere and alpaca are the warmest natural fibers by weight. For active warmth — where moisture management and durability matter alongside insulation — merino wool is the most practical choice. Standard wool performs well for everyday cold-weather garments and outerwear. Silk works as a lightweight warmth-adding underlayer. Linen and cotton are warm-weather fibers and should not be counted on to insulate.
