Linen for summer
Linen is the most breathable natural fiber for warm-weather clothing. For men, it is most useful in shirts, trousers, and shorts. A linen shirt in 145–185gsm weight moves air better than cotton at comparable thickness, and the slightly rough texture softens with every wash. Linen trousers have a relaxed drape that works in casual or smart-casual contexts. Raw (unwashed) linen softens over time; pre-washed linen is softer from the start but may shrink less dramatically. European linen — grown and processed in France, Belgium, or the Netherlands — sets the standard for quality and consistency.
Merino for travel and layering
Merino wool is the fiber that has changed what travel packing looks like for many men. A merino t-shirt or polo worn three or four times before washing — without the odor that would come from any other fabric — means packing less and doing laundry less. Merino also layers well: a fine-knit merino mid-layer adds significant warmth without bulk. Look for 18.5 micron or finer for direct skin contact without irritation. Machine washable merino (often treated with a chlorine or polymer process) is easier to care for than untreated merino.
Wool for outerwear
A well-made wool coat or jacket is one of the most cost-effective clothing investments for men. Wool outerwear holds its structure, does not pill the way synthetic fleece does, and improves in appearance with age rather than looking worn out. Boiled wool and felted wool are especially durable for outerwear — water-resistant and windproof without needing chemical treatments. A wool overcoat bought at 30 is still a reasonable option at 50. The investment is in materials and construction, not trend.
Cotton for basics
Cotton remains the most practical choice for everyday basics — t-shirts, underwear, casual trousers. The key variable is fiber quality. Long-staple cotton (Pima, Egyptian, or Supima) produces a smoother, stronger fabric that holds its shape and color through repeated washing. Standard short-staple cotton pills and fades faster. For men's basics, a heavier jersey weight (180–220gsm) in long-staple cotton will outperform a lighter, cheaper cotton t-shirt on every measure over time.
What to look for in certifications
Certifications worth checking: GOTS for organic fiber and responsible processing, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for tested-safe finished garments, RWS or ZQ Merino for responsible wool sourcing, and European Flax for linen. No single certification covers everything, but brands that carry at least one verifiable certification have made a commitment that brands without them have not.
