What is silk?

Silk is a natural protein fiber produced by silkworms as they build their cocoons. It is the only natural fiber that comes as a continuous filament — a single cocoon can yield a thread between 300 and 900 meters long. That filament, combined with silk's natural luster and softness, makes it one of the most valued textile fibers in the world.

How silk is made

Silk begins with the silkworm — the larva of the Bombyx mori moth. Raised on mulberry leaves, the silkworm spins a cocoon around itself when ready to pupate. It does this by extruding a continuous protein filament from two glands in its head, coated in a sticky protein called sericin that glues the cocoon together.

To harvest the silk, cocoons are placed in boiling water or steam to dissolve the sericin and loosen the filament. Workers reel the filaments from several cocoons simultaneously onto a spool — a process called silk reeling. Multiple filaments are twisted together to form a single thread of usable strength. The thread is then woven or knitted into fabric. This entire process is called sericulture.

What is silk made of?

Silk fiber is made of two proteins. The inner core is fibroin — a structural protein that gives silk its strength and characteristic sheen. The outer coating is sericin, a gummy protein that holds the cocoon together. In raw silk, the sericin is present and makes the fabric feel stiff and dull. During processing, the sericin is removed (degummed), revealing the smooth, lustrous fibroin fiber that silk is known for. The resulting fiber is approximately 80% fibroin and 20% sericin before degumming.

Where does silk come from?

Silk comes from silkworms — specifically the caterpillars of the Bombyx mori moth, which feed on mulberry leaves. Silk production (sericulture) is concentrated in China and India, which together produce over 90% of the world's supply. China has been producing silk for at least 5,000 years. Vietnam, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Brazil are smaller but significant producers. The historical Silk Road trade routes that connected China to Europe and the Middle East were named for the trade in this fiber.

Is silk a natural fiber?

Yes. Silk is one of the four major natural fibers alongside cotton, wool, and linen. A silkworm produces it without any chemical conversion — the silkworm makes fiber; humans harvest and reel it. No manufacturing process creates silk fiber; it exists already as fiber when spun by the silkworm. This makes it categorically different from semi-synthetic fibers like viscose, modal, or lyocell, which start from natural sources but require chemical processing to become fiber.

How is silk made into fabric?

After the filaments are reeled from cocoons and twisted into thread, the thread is woven or knitted. The weave pattern determines the final fabric type. Silk charmeuse uses a satin weave for a smooth, glossy finish. Silk chiffon uses a plain weave for a sheer, lightweight fabric. Silk organza is tightly woven for a stiff, transparent fabric. Silk dupioni uses irregular yarns for a textured, slubbed finish. The same fiber — silk — produces very different fabrics depending on how it is woven.

What is a silkworm?

A silkworm is the larva (caterpillar) of the Bombyx mori moth. Despite the name, it is not a worm — it is an insect larva. Silkworms are raised in controlled conditions on mulberry leaf farms. The Bombyx mori has been domesticated for silk production for thousands of years and can no longer survive in the wild — it has been selectively bred entirely for silk yield and cannot fly or forage independently. A single silkworm spins a cocoon of 300–900 meters of continuous filament over three to eight days.

Why is silk so expensive?

Silk requires significant labor at every stage of production. Silkworms must be raised carefully, fed fresh mulberry leaves multiple times daily, and the temperature and humidity of their environment must be controlled. Cocoons must be harvested at exactly the right time. Reeling the filament from cocoons requires skill and precision — filaments break easily. A single kilogram of silk thread requires approximately 5,000 silkworm cocoons. The combination of biological constraints, hand labor, and time makes silk inherently expensive compared to plant fibers or synthetic alternatives.

Is silk breathable?

Yes. Silk is one of the most breathable natural fibers. The triangular prism-like structure of silk fibroin reflects light and also allows air to circulate. Silk naturally regulates temperature — it is cool in warm weather and insulating in cold. It also wicks moisture and dries quickly. These properties make it comfortable across a wider temperature range than most fabrics, which is why silk has been used for both summer and winter garments historically.

Is silk sustainable?

Silk has a lower environmental impact than synthetic fibers but involves animal welfare considerations. Conventional silk production requires boiling cocoons with the pupae inside to harvest the filament — the silkworm dies in the process. Peace silk (also called ahimsa silk) allows the moth to emerge before harvesting the broken cocoon filament, but produces a coarser fiber. Silk requires no pesticides or irrigation the way cotton does, and the fiber itself is fully biodegradable. The environmental footprint depends largely on how the mulberry trees are grown and whether the silk is processed using clean chemistry.
