Natural fiber vs synthetic activewear
Most activewear is made from plastic. Polyester, nylon, and spandex dominate the category because they are cheap, stretchy, and durable. The case for switching is not just environmental — for many uses, natural fiber activewear performs better where it matters most.
What synthetic activewear is actually made from
Polyester, nylon, and spandex are all petroleum-derived plastics. Polyester is the most common — it is essentially the same material as a plastic bottle, spun into fine threads. Nylon is similar in origin. Spandex (also sold as Lycra or elastane) provides the stretch in most form-fitting activewear. All of these materials shed microplastic fibers every time they are washed. Where merino wins: odor resistance (substantially better — not marginal), temperature regulation (merino works across a wider temperature range without separate garments), moisture management at the skin level (absorbs rather than repelling), comfort next to skin, and end-of-life environmental impact (merino biodegrades; polyester does not). For endurance athletes doing high-output, high-abrasion sport, polyester is harder to replace. Natural fiber activewear wins when: odor control matters across multiple wears; the activity involves variable temperatures (hiking, backcountry skiing, travel); skin sensitivity is a factor; you are buying fewer pieces with the intention of keeping them longer; or reducing microplastic shedding is a priority. A pragmatic approach: keep synthetic pieces for high-abrasion specialty use and shift base layers, training tops, and travel layers to merino.
The environmental case
A single wash of a synthetic activewear garment releases an estimated 700,000 or more microfiber fragments, according to research by Plymouth University and others. These fibers are microscopic plastic particles that wastewater treatment does not fully capture. They enter rivers, oceans, and food chains. Global activewear production and laundering at scale means billions of these particles enter the environment every day. Merino wool sheds fibers too — but those fibers are natural protein, chemically similar to human hair. They break down in the environment and do not accumulate as persistent pollutants. Merino production has its own environmental considerations — land use, methane from sheep, water for processing — but these are significantly more manageable than the microplastic burden of synthetic activewear at scale.
