Merino
Merino is a breed of sheep that produces exceptionally fine, soft wool. The fiber diameter is typically 15–24 microns — fine enough to wear directly against the skin without itching. It is the standard material for performance base layers and travel clothing.
Where it comes from
Merino sheep originated in Spain and are now raised primarily in New Zealand and Australia. New Zealand's ZQ Merino certification is widely regarded as the leading standard for responsible merino production.
Properties
Microplastics
Merino is a natural wool fiber. It does not shed synthetic microplastic particles. This is significant for activewear: synthetic performance fabrics shed microplastics with every wash, while merino performs without them.
