Grade A vs. Grade B fiber

Grade A cashmere fibers are 14–15.5 microns thick — fine enough not to scratch skin. Most fast-fashion cashmere uses coarser Grade B or C, which pills quickly.

Ply matters

Two-ply cashmere holds its shape. Single-ply is lighter but more prone to pilling. For sweaters you'll wear frequently, two-ply lasts noticeably longer.

Mongolia vs. China vs. Scotland

Most raw cashmere fiber comes from Inner Mongolia. Scottish mills (Johnstons of Elgin, Barrie) are known for finishing quality. Transparency about origin is a good sign.

Care determines lifespan

Hand wash cold, dry flat. A cashmere sweater cared for properly can last 20+ years. Machine washing shrinks and matts the fibers permanently.
